The Idea

I am a boarding school teacher, or rather was.  After nine years of living, teaching and eating at a boarding school, I have gone into the real world. Okay, not the real world, grad school, but I, for the first time, have to pay rent and have roommates and cook for myself.  I realize this is a step that many have to take at age 22; I just put it off a few years.  I am loving my new living arrangements; no knocks on my door at 11 pm, no girls yelling in the hallway, and an outside entrance to my house. (It is the little things).   I am not loving cooking for myself.  Cooking for a party or for a group of people bring it on! I love it! But the time and effort that goes into cooking a dinner party worthy dish for one is frankly not worth it. It is expensive for one. Usually,  I end up making similar dishes of sauteed veggies, tomato paste, and garlic over rice or pasta.  It is not bad, it just gets boring, especially since I want to make enough for left overs.  Lamenting this to my mom, who is a fabulous cook and wicked creative with food, she got an idea.  Wanting to help me out, she went online looking for a cookbook that catered to the single cook, she found nothing.  So she decided that she would create one, of sorts, for me.

Here is her plan: once a week she will send me three recipes all of which have common ingredients, so the shopping is easy and food is not being wasted.  There will be a main theme, like chicken or beef or rice, and each recipe can be made with that.  The idea, for those of us on a budget, is to keep it simple but still flavorful and healthy.  Along, with the recipes, she will also send a grocery list, (my mom is really awesome...or I am really pathetic take your pick)  So each week, there will be a grocery list, and three recipes, and a chance for you to shop, cook, eat and then add comments or ask questions.  Enjoy the grub!
